Aug 29, 2011 (excerpt from my life in writing)

My first day of painting was challenging. Watercolor is a medium with which I struggle. I loved the variation and dimension I got with the medium despite the fact that it is a much more analytical process for me than say oil.

This class will be good for me. It will help to broaden my horizons, as well as, challenge my work ethic and technique. It has been a while since i have been so thoroughly challenged in an art class and i look forward to the future.

I like the relaxed atmosphere of the class as well as the exploratory, unafraid way the Professor made us dive right in! For someone who is generally cautious , until she knows what she’s doing it was a little discovering but sometimes I think it is good to be forced out of your comfort zone. I realized late in the game that I choose a more challenging fruit/vegetable (I don’t know what it is).

"I don't know what it is"

I picked this object because the contour and horizontal lines intrigued me; My yes kept being drown to it. In theory I thought my use of color had improved as I’ve been painting now for years. It is difficult to think and work backwards. I learned things about myself Monday, I have turned into a perfectionist. Watercolor is more about going with the flow, and I had a hard time doing that (boy did I). I’ll endeavor to work on my flexibility throughout the course of this semester.

So in summary, I’m excited for this semester. Challenged, but excited to be challenged, and too stubborn to give into defeat. I can’t wait for the next class.

Thanks for your frankness. I really like the idea that you find it really difficult so you like it because you feel challenged. Brava.
